Sewer Smell in the House: Causes and Solutions

If your house suddenly smells like sewage, something is wrong, and it’s not something you should ignore. Sewer odors can come from a simple issue like a dry drain trap, or from a bigger problem like a blocked sewer line, a broken pipe, or a venting issue. Either way, the smell is your warning sign.

At Specialty Plumbing and Drain LLC, our Unrestricted Master Plumber helps homeowners across Metro North Atlanta track down sewer odors fast and fix them the right way. We use proven diagnostics like video pipe inspections (drain camera inspection/sewer camera inspection), and we offer solutions ranging from drain cleaning and hydro jetting to trenchless repair options when a sewer line is damaged. We also provide 24/7 emergency plumbing, and we’re proud of our 5-star Google rating.

If you have sewer smell in the house and you’re not sure why, call Specialty Plumbing and Drain LLC now. We’ll find the source and get your home back to normal.

Quick answer: Why does my house smell like a sewer?

Most sewer smells come from one of four things: a dry or failing trap, a venting problem, a partial sewer line blockage, or a damaged drain/sewer pipe. The right fix depends on identifying which one is happening in your home.
What sewer gas smells like (and why it matters)

Sewer gas often smells like rotten eggs, sulfur, or a strong sewage odor. Besides being unpleasant, it can signal a plumbing problem that can worsen quickly, especially if it’s tied to a main sewer line clog or a broken pipe. If the smell is strong and persistent, or you notice multiple drains acting up at the same time, it’s time to get it checked.

Common causes of sewer smell in the house

1) A dry P-trap (very common)
Every sink, shower, tub, and floor drain has a P-trap designed to hold a small amount of water. That water acts like a seal that blocks sewer gas from coming back into the home. If a drain hasn’t been used in a while (guest bathroom, basement floor drain, laundry room sink), the water can evaporate and let odors through.
What you can do: Run water for 20–30 seconds in the affected drain and see if the smell improves.

2) A failing wax ring on a toilet
A toilet wax ring seals the base of the toilet to the drain pipe. If it fails, sewer gas can leak out around the toilet, and you may notice odor strongest in that bathroom.
Common clues: Smell near the toilet base, rocking toilet, or moisture around the base.

3) A clogged or partially clogged main sewer line
If your main sewer line is partially blocked, wastewater and gases can push back into the home. Odors may be worse when you run water, flush, or use multiple fixtures.
Common clues:

  • Multiple slow drains at once
  • Gurgling sounds in toilets or drains
  • Water backing up in a tub or floor drain

This is one of the situations where a video pipe inspection is extremely helpful because it shows us what’s happening inside the line.

4) Buildup in a drain line (kitchen, laundry, or bathroom)
Even without a full clog, grease, soap scum, sludge, and organic buildup can create strong odors, especially in kitchen sinks and laundry drains. If the smell is strongest at one fixture and the rest of the house is fine, it may be localized buildup.

5) A plumbing vent problem
Your plumbing system relies on vent pipes to move air properly and release sewer gases above the roofline. If a vent is blocked or not functioning correctly, odors can show up inside the home, and drains may gurgle.
Common clues: Gurgling drains, slow draining, odor that comes and goes.

6) A cracked, broken, or leaking drain pipe
If a drain pipe is damaged behind a wall, under a slab, or in a crawlspace, sewer odors can seep into the home. This can happen from age, shifting, corrosion, or past repairs. A camera inspection can help confirm pipe condition in many cases, and we may recommend trenchless repair options if a sewer line is compromised.

7) Basement floor drain or rarely used utility drain
Basement floor drains are notorious for drying out or developing buildup. If the smell is strongest in the basement, this is one of the first places we check.

8) Sewer line issues outside the home
Sometimes the odor is coming from a problem in the yard-side sewer line, especially if there’s a break, root intrusion, or a belly holding waste and water.

What you can check safely before calling a plumber

Here are quick, safe checks that can help narrow it down:

  • Run water in unused sinks/showers/floor drains to refill traps
  • Check if the smell is strongest near a specific drain or toilet
  • Look for slow draining or gurgling (signs of a bigger line issue)
  • Note whether the odor is worse after laundry, showers, or flushing

What we don’t recommend: dumping harsh chemicals into drains. Chemical drain cleaners often don’t solve odor causes, and they can create safety hazards and damage plumbing over time.

How we find the source (and fix it for good)

When you call Specialty Plumbing and Drain LLC, our Unrestricted Master Plumber focuses on two things: identifying the source and preventing repeat problems. Depending on what we find, solutions may include:

Drain cleaning
If the odor is caused by localized buildup, a proper cleaning can eliminate the source.

Hydro jetting
If there’s heavy buildup in a drain or sewer line, hydro jetting can thoroughly clean pipe walls and remove sludge and grease that snaking may leave behind.

Video pipe inspection (drain camera inspection/sewer camera inspection)
If symptoms point to a main sewer line issue or recurring problems, a camera inspection lets us confirm:

  • Blockages and what’s causing them
  • Root intrusion
  • Cracks, offsets, collapse
  • Bellies holding standing water

Repair options (including trenchless repair when appropriate)
If the sewer line is damaged, cleaning won’t solve it. We’ll walk you through repair options, including trenchless repair methods when they make sense for your situation.
